PCB & Schematic Redesign for a Battery-Powered Smart Home Sensor
A smart home hardware team’s first PCB revision for a battery-powered environmental sensor was drawing more standby current than the product’s multi-year battery-life target allowed, and layout issues were causing intermittent radio range problems late in bring-up — with a production run already scheduled.
We re-architected the power tree and revised the schematic to cut parasitic standby draw, reworked decoupling and RF trace routing for the wireless module, and ran a design-for-manufacturing review ahead of the production build.
Standby current dropped enough to meet the multi-year battery-life target, the reworked board passed EMC pre-compliance testing on the first pass, and consolidating a redundant regulator stage cut per-unit BOM cost by roughly 8%. The design cleared for its scheduled 5,000-unit production run without a further hardware spin.
